New Years Day at Farlington Marshes

What better way to start the new decade than with confiding bearded tits happily feeding in the reedtops. These birds are at Farlington Marshes all year round, but seldom do they make themselves as visible as they did on a new years day guided walk. Here are a few pictures of some of the 20+ individuals that were seen:

Male bearded tit.

Female bearded tit.

Getting to the very end of the reed requires some skilful acrobatics.

Other avian interest included two marsh harriers, a peregrine falcon, and many thousands of waders, ducks and geese. A singing skylark heralded spring to come. Three song thrushes felt the same as the lark and were also exercising their syrinxes. The weather was grey but the birds more than made up for it.

Confiding little grebe.

Shovelers, male and female.
